Several have asked about my sign off of "Paws Up!" and what it means. For me this is a phrase that has several meanings (as all good catch phrases should have). The first and foremost, and probably the one most will think of, is the dog-version of "thumb's up". Okay, it can be the cat version too, so all you cats out there can stop swishing your tail and settle down. So the meaning is great job, fantastic day, way to go, ready for take off and all of that good stuff.
For me, the phrase has more meanings than just the similarity to "thumb's up". From the time I was a small puppy, who didn't even know what her paws were for, whenever I was confronted with something that made me think, I pulled one of my paw's up in the air. Why I did it as a puppy? Who knows? Why do I still use the same gesture? Simple. I get what I want. For instance, if I want a treat, I get in front of my Papa, wag my tail, smile and then sit down and put up my paw. He knows that I'm asking for a treat every time. (And since he is such a soft touch, I always get it to0).
I also like to dance, so I stand on my hind legs, put my paws up in the air and sway with the music. Just imagine me dancing & skipping down the street to "Put Your Hands Up!" Then there is also putting your paws up when its time to take a nap. And whenever I'm unsure about something and the alert "Danger, Will Rogers" is sounding in my head, I put my paw up in case I need to make a quick get-a-way. Readiness is the key.
So. . . with all of that being said. . . Paws Up! (who knows, you just might get a treat!)

Holiday Howls
I'm sorry that I haven't had a chance to get to the computer and let you know what has been going on with Gryphon and me, but my Mama has been hogging the keyboard. She's been tied up with getting a new aspect of the business up and running. Something about selling 24/7 computer support through Juvio ~ Solutions for Life. She seems to think it makes a lot of sense for the average home user and some small businesses because the price is very reasonable. I never get my fuzz in a fluff over computer issues. First of all that's what my Mama does for her day job and secondly being the princess of the house, that is always someone else's job.
Anyway, I wanted to let everyone know that we went to visit my cousin Harley this past weekend. She has calmed down a little since we saw her on New Year's, but she still thinks we're some kind of squeak toy for her to play with. Being a black labrador puppy, she doesn't realize that she is gargantuan in comparison to our petiteness. I couldn't believe it when Gryphon was thinking about playing with her (for one brief and incredibly crazy moment). I think her head is bigger than I am and I almost took a ride on her nose when she was trying to say hello to us under the kitchen table (where we were hiding).
I jumped up in my Grammy's lap for a few moments and introduced myself to the newest member of the family - little Sammy J. I have to say, she's pretty cute, but she sure does sleep a lot. Puppies are a lot more rambunctious at that age, and fuzzier.
Well, here comes Mama again, I'll bet she needs to use the computer again.
I'll post again as soon as I can grab the keyboard away. Until then. Paws Up!

A Dog's Life
Okay. Everyone has heard the phrase “A dog’s life” and it is used like it is supposed to be a bad thing. I’m here to tell you that a dog’s life can be pretty sweet. Take this morning for instance, everyone was sleeping nicely and all of a sudden this great whopping buzzer starts ringing. Both Mama and Papa start groaning and slooowwly moving to get the day started. Gryphon and I poked our heads out from underneath the covers, saw that it was still dark out and put our heads back down to continue our very good sleep.
There was that slightly uncomfortable moment when Papa insisted that we go outside to “take care of business”. But then, it was back inside for our short commute from the bedroom to the den, where we keep our nice comfortable cage. We snuggled down in the fleece and Papa and Mama left for the grind of the work day and driving in the rain.
Gryphon and I heard the rain coming down, and I must admit we both snickered behind our paws that all of the adult two legged creatures have to go out in the bad weather to their job, still tired from their self-imposed time change while we had to get on with our early morning nap, to be followed by our mid-morning drowse, not to mention the stretch & shift routine in the afternoon, just prior to our afternoon slumber.
Now. . .That’s a dog’s life! Paws Up!

Caged
Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage. ~ Anonymous
Cage. Pen. Crate. Whatever you want to call it, they are made for animals. There seems to be a division among people as to whether these things are good or bad from the dog’s point of view. I won’t speak for other species such as birds because I’m not one and I don’t talk bird, so I can’t tell you how they feel about the situation. I do know that when a friend of my Mama’s saw a puppy picture of Gryphon walking past a cage, she shrieked “Puppy Prison!” in horror.
Well, I’m here to tell you that cages in the dog world can be a very good thing. One: It is MY domain. I never have to shove over for anyone in my cage (with the exception of Gryphon of course). The only exception to this rule is the small humanoids that run around on all fours. They have invaded a few times when their parents weren’t watching too closely. Two: When the door is closed, nothing can get me, so I feel safe. Three: There is a supply of food and water inside with me, so I can always have a little nosh when I feel like it. Four: I have a blanket to lie on to take my power beauty naps during the day. One additional tip on the blanket front . . . demand fleece. I love my fleece blankets, they are soft and fuzzy like me, make a nice soft bed, and are cozy and warm when the weather is cold.
The onset of cages in Griffie World started when my predecessor Mitzi was still alive. Because she was a rescue dog, she had a lot of insecurities and the vet recommended “crating” to help alleviate her anxiety. For Mitzi, it was a little bit of a love/hate relationship with the cage. She hated it because when she had to go in the cage meant that she would be left alone in the house (and she suffered from separation anxiety). But, having the cage did calm her anxiety because it became her “safe zone”. It kept her from hurting herself in a panic stricken state, and helped to keep the house intact too.
One last quote on cages:
George Bernard Shaw, 1856-1950
Irish literary critic, playwright and essayist. 1925 Nobel Prize for Literature
Until next time. Paws up!

I never thought much of the courage of a lion tamer. Inside the cage he is at least safe from people.

Who’s the Boss
Believe it or not, I am starting my own blog. Mainly because I have a lot of opinions that I think everyone should know. Topic of the day? The fallacy of the relationship between man and dog. Historically speaking, man has always considered himself the master of his pets. When referring to a pet’s owner, we often hear something like “Phoenix’s master, Denny” (my Papa by the way).
I’d like to take this opportunity to say “BUNK”. In my mind, I refer to my Mama and Papa as my servants. Before all you two-legged critters start howling “uppity”, hear me out. When my dog dish is empty, do I even have to raise a paw to have it filled? No, I have two people who are supposed to notice the absence of food or water and automatically refill them. When I take exercise, I always have a body-guard attendant with me at all times. Even if all I have to do is take a poop, I have someone to cater to my every need. All I have to do is show them my appreciation so they continue to server me diligently on a daily basis.
Now, are you still so sure that man is the master, or have you come around to my way of thinking that I am indeed royalty and receive catering to my every whim? I know, some of you are thinking, but what about those dogs who do work for a living? I propose that they work because they want to and their people only assist them in getting the job done.
All for now. Paws up!
